9:10 am - Valentines Day, Combat, and Puppets
So three things today!

WEdnesday was Valentine's Day and this was a great one. For one thing, class was cancelled due to the GIANT snow storm turned freezing rain turned snow turned sleet and hail storm. Rachel and I stayed in bed for a long time and then decided we were both going to keel over from hunger, so we called our friend Bridget and the three of us were going to go get Tandoor (indiana food.) Well, my car was not only frozen solid, but at the bottom of an ice covered snowy driveway. It took us one and a half hours to finally get out of the 20 foot driveway, and then another hour and a half to get the food. The poor man working in Tandoor was the only person working that day. The other person who was supposed to come in was in an accident caused by the weather. By the time we got our food, Rachel had to go to her rehearsal, so Bridget and I ate our food and watched Strangers with Candy. After rehearsal, Rachel and I watched Shall We Dance at her apartment and fell asleep. It was the best day ever. Full of adventure and wonderment.

Yesterday, Thursday, I bought my Stage Combat textbook, finally, and I can not put this book down. I am reading parts that were not assigned! That is how informative and how accessible this book is. It is called, Swashbuckling by Richard Lane. If you are interested in Stage Combat, this is the book to read. It has great info on the history of weapons and the evolution of stage combat, great warm up exercises, nice visuals to help you see the basics of the combat moves. NOTE! this book is not a supplement for training by a certified SAFD teacher. It is meant to help build your knowledge and vocabulary to ready you for the training.

On another Combat note: We have moved from Unarmed combat to Rapier and Dagger. WE are learning footwork while holding the weapons to get used to the weightiness of them. Wonderful exercise. I am in the best shape of my life.

My partner, Kelly, and I are also taking the Unarmed fight we learned for class and using it our Sketch Comedy Show called, "The Company." It is going to be very funny with the modifications we have made to it.

In the puppet world, but still in sketch comedy! We're doing a super secret sketch that will involve a cute puppet puppy. I will keep you post on the progress, maybe even with a photo.

Ok, off to combat workshop!

LOVE!

Seeing that ACTF was about almost a month ago, I guess I should update you on what happened that week.

So I will do so as I sit here and watch SAW III...it's really odd.

SO ACTF! If you remember there were three main things that I was doing at ACTF. Design competition, Irene Ryans, and thfe Fringe Festival.

DESIGN: I did not win Tech/Craft which I was entered in, but a young man who built props for She Loves Me did. Everyone loved my design and plant, especially the people from Slippery Rock who rented the puppet (not from seeing it at ACTF but by seeing the performance) and a girl named Steph Cathro. She reminded me of a friend of mine, Jack Grey, so I felt very easy talking to her. It turned out she works for a puppet comapny named Puppet Heap who build among other things Bear in the Big Blue House, It's a Big Big World, and a lot more that I don't want to tell you, but she said that I should apply for an internship there because they are looking for some. So I called and they trust Steph's word so they gave me a standing interview for May when I graduate. YAY.

IRENE RYANS: Oh well. I didn't break at all, but I had a lot of fun with my partner and it opened me to working new things with Shakespeare.

FRINGE: It went very well. The Company got a lot of laughs, and people wanted us to think about touring to their schools to perform and give improv sketch comedy work shops.

I also went to many workshops (Micheal Chekhov technique, Commedia Dell'Acro, URTA workshop) and I learned a lot.

I got a subscription to BACKSTAGE for christmas and I have been applying to different jobs like woah since. I have gotten a few interested people emailing me back and forth. This means nothing more than that until I get a job, but it is exciting that they know I am still in school but willing to work around that.

Well, the movie is over and so is my update. Look for something maybe next week.

7:31 am - ACTF or A Crazy Time Freak-fest
ACTF is the American College Theater Festival. I have been nominated to go in the actor scholarship competition, the Design Tech Management competition, and The Company has been selected into the Fringe Festival.

DESIGN TECH:
My design of Audrey II for Little Shop of Horrors will be presented at ACTF under Tech/Craft category. I am excited and a lot nervous, because a lot of these tech people there are going to be so focused on their technical theater, while I am more of an actor who dabbles in tech. My presentation is based on the acheivement of combining design, construction, and performance into one job. I go from my research of Georgia O'Keefe and phallic mushrooms to my exploration drawings of evil vulvas and STD carrying penises to my working sketches, my patterns/designs, then to the process, and then finally finished product. I also cover the technical problem of AUdrey II's voice a being separate actor and the fact that I needed four floating heads at the end of the show. All in all, I need to be a little more concise and I'll be fine.

ACTOR COMP:
Irene Ryan, the actress who played Granny on Beverly Hillbillies started this scholarship and this year, I'll be performing a 3 minute scene from Henry IV, Part 1, a 2 minute scene from Three Days of Rain, and a 1 minute monologue from Visiting Mr. Green. Also excited and nervous, but only because I want to do well. My partner, Mianna, is the best and has been really good about rehearsing a lot this week even with both our busy schedules. we really are able to create some nice moments between the two of us. My coaches, barb and Rob, have been wonderful. Kicking my butt into overdrive with thinking about the action and characters and then forcing me to stop being so academic. I feel really prepared with this.

FRINGE FESTIVAL:
The Company, our sketch comedy troupe, is performing a one hour "best of" show at the fringe titled, "The Company: The Anti-Drug" It is wonderfully vicious in its humour, teasing everything from Public Service Announcements, Star Wars, Failed Superheroes, all the way to a childrens playground. The cast of fourteen, including myself, are really excited we get to showcase our stuff. Hopefully we'll have a good house for the show, but we will have fun performing with each other no matter what.

That is all for this week. I have to be off to rehearse some more for everything. I will update when I get home on what happened and more about the next week.

Thank you so much,
Patrick

4:10 pm - Get another tune
Tagged by Liz Mom

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your LiveJournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

1. Machine ~ Josh Grobin. Rachel listens to it a lot and I have gotten to really like him
2. Superhero ~Janes Addiction. Chrissy got me hooked to Entourage and this song.
3. I'll Be There ~ The Wild Party. Taye Diggs is really cool and I like to sing this song.
4. Suite bergamasque, for piano. Looking for a song to associate with George Tesman
5. An Actor's Twelve Days of Christmas. It makes me giggle.
6. The Shire's Theme from Lord of the Rings. I like the images it brings to mind
7. Alice ~ Venus Hum. Loving Annette Strean and her voice and her wonderous ideas!

Ok, since everyone i know on livejournal has all ready done this. I tag no one.

8:03 am - I'm going to go back there someday
I visited sesame place yesterday. bridget was kind enough to spend her day off showing me around and introducing me to people.

Ok, enough.

My new business card.

Someone had mentioned how I am the claddagh puppeteer, since I wear two claddagh rings while I puppeteer. I felt it fit rather well; friendship, loyalty, and love.

It makes me happy.

11:00 pm - Weekend of rehearsal
So I registered for classes. YAY. second to last to time to do that. Barb and I figured out that I will graduate on time EASY! My last semester, I will be able to take any corse I damn well please. I love it when things go right that way.

I will be taking:

Physical Science II and the Lab
Gender, Language, and Society in Literature (reminds me of [info]earlofgrey)
Acting Shakespeare
Dialects (oh I pray I do this well and not suck)
Classic Theatre History II
and Practicum

It's a full schedule, but why not? I've done every other semester.

After I scheduled for class, I speedily hopped in the car and drove home to Philly. I got home around 8:30 and ate pizza and showed my parents the tape of LINE. I then got some muuch needed sleep.
Today, I was up and ready for rehearsal. Got down to Ryan's by 11 and we sang our little hearts out. The music is at either end of my range so I have some difficulty feeling comfortable with the songs. Oh well. They still sounded good by the end of the day.
I came home, ate some food. WEnt over to Stiggy's to see how he was doing and then came home for, again, some much needed rest.

Tomorrow, I have my interview with Sesame Place, then blocking rehearsal, then the drive back to Indiana, and THEN homework.

Ah such is life.

Ok, bed time.

10:50 am - "The Dangers of Puppeteering" or "The Adventures of Chiropractics"
I have a new chriopractor. This one is the only one who has wanted to take x-rays and thank god he did, because he found so many things wrong with my back. I have two sublexations (fancy word for out of joint discs) in my neck, two in my middle back, and two in my lower back, the lowest one completely closing the space for my nerve. My doctor, not jokingly, said that he was surprised I could walk and that I should have been in extreme agonizing pain.

I have to see him 3 times a week for 6 weeks. He is the only chiropractor I have been to that has taken this as completely serious as I want someone to. My back and its mobility is my life. I can't be in a wheelchair and perform puppets...well, I could, and it would be a neat gimmick, but i'd rather not.

Other than that. Caveman Harry is looking nice. The skin (antron fleece) for his face and hands will be sewn today, I hope.

TONIGHT: Caretaker by Pinter in the Waller Studio theater!

TOMORROW: A New Grey's Anatomy on Television.

Ok, I might take my work out of the house since I am going stir crazy!

9:38 pm - Caveman Harry
This is Caveman Harry )

He is a caveman living in today's modern world.  Things of

technology fascinate Caveman Harry, even the things we take forgranted

like clicky pens to internet.  Harry is being built as you read

this probably.  I will have the finished product done in about two

weeks and then I must descide whether or not I will sell Harry.

::SINGS:: NEWS!

My friend Bridget is a dancer at Sesame Place in Philadelphia. She usually plays Bert or Cookie Monster and she is a trouper for it. Well, the good news is that she might have gotten me a job at Sesame Place as a puppeteer/costume character. I'd be working there and at RAPC, so money money money....well, maybe just like money.

It would be nice, because RAPC would be primarily be performing and rehearsing new shows and building a little, but I'd also be working at SP to get in a little extra cash.

That is the good news of today! My friend Ryan Dillon is on Sesame Street. Really proud of him. He looks like he is doing well. I watch Sesame Street "dillon"gently now to spot him or hope I don't see him because that means he is in a character. Hopefully, I will be working with him more when I get back to Philly.

I have been "commissioned" and I say "commissioned" a with quoteys because there is no pay just publicity, to build a plant for my friend Johnny Smith for his parody of Little Shop of Horrors in the upcoming Company Show. Company is an improv-ish sketch comedy-esque troupe. They work all semester and then at the end of the semester they make everyone pee their pants! Great fun. I will be working with them in hopefully two puppet scenes that Johnny wants to do.

I will be starting a basic website soon with the journal linked to it so I can post important dates and upcoming events. Also, I would like to put here a spot where you can ask for me to build you something. I probably will because my Sesame Street friend Ryan is I think 17 and has built more than I have drawn, so I am behind! GIMMIE IDEAS AND I WILL GIVE YOU PUPPETS. It will be cheap too, probably only supplies no labor costs.

That seems to be a pretty fairly simple update of what is going on about now. SO I will talk to you guys later.

Remember: If you find yourself in a scene with no way out; eat something, blow something, or just throw penguins! ~Jim Henson

10:06 am - Time and Music
Little Shop has opened and closed and I am free of the vines that bind of Audrey II! It was a lot of work and worth it all.

Gary Adamson, the production stage manager of the broadway revival of LSoH, came and saw it and said how impressed he was with me and we hung out for about an entire day. It was nice. Smurf Amy and I went and had dinner with him. He helped in the costume shop with a cool little trick to cover the stilts and called me a genbius when I told him our budget for the whole project. That was nice.

In a related note, I have been nominated to take my design and build to the American College Theater Festival Stage/Tech craft competition next January. That should be fun and exciting, because it is allready nerve wracking. Not to bad but i am nervous.

I know i promised you pictures, but I am updating from the theater's computer and I do not have the html coding to do it. I will do it over spring break I promise.

Other puppetry news.

The 18th of March is my first rehearsal for It's A Mazing, my professional debut in May in Philadelphia. I am excited. I have my script and I am starting to learn my lines...trying to.

I will also be building my own characters again, so if anyone has any sketches or cartoons they would like see brought to life, forward them to me and I will get to work. Right now I am kidna stuck for ideas.

ok, well, I am going to go get ready for my acting for the camera class. I hope everyone is doing well and feeling rested. I'm off!

PHOTOS ARE HERE!

today, the fabric came in today! I experimented with the fabric a little and then covered the Audrey II 1.

I have to say, I love my crew. They both are amazing. They really attack things. I am afraid I underestimate them without realizing. I just don't want them to get lost and not have me there.

But enough jabber y'all want the PICTURES )
